Doors

The doors on the ship are pretty representative of doors you will find in most space stations and ships in the CSS. They're a common, every-day item that the crew interacts with dozens of times a day and yet they are difficult to describe on the MUCK so this article is an opportunity to go into how they work.

There are broadly two categories of doors; interior and exterior. And then within those categories, a few different types. Let's start with interior doors as those are the ones you will encounter the most.

Interior Doors

Interior doors of the ship come in a few shapes and sizes, but generally speaking there are doors designed for people to move around the ship and doors designed for cargo to move around the ship. The latter is also designed to be exposed to vacuum on one side for an extended period, while the former is generally not expected to take that kind of stress.

All interior doors, of all sizes and types, are “pocket doors”, meaning instead of swinging out on hinges, they slide on a track into the wall. This both maximizes usable space since doors do not need clearance around them, and is a safety and usage thing because in zero-G a hinged door becomes a menace and one must always consider what happens in an emergency.

Common Interior Doors

The most common interior door is the kind designed for people to go through. This kind of door is present practically everywhere; everyone's quarters, the door to the lounge, the door to the kitchens, etc. These interior doors are made of a metal-clad composite core; they are on the heavy side when off the track, but can be lifted and carried by your average adult albeit with some huffing and puffing.
